Writing workshops

This April was released in the magazine Toumaï a story I did on writing workshops. As this publication is geared primarily to the immigrant, spoke with several writers and foreign students on their experience in the field. Among the former are Leonardo Valencia (Ecuador), Julio Espinosa (Chile) and Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez (Venezuela). Among the latter, Claudia Tricerri (Peru), Inés Bayon (Colombia) and Luis Borges (Venezuela). To everyone, thanks for your time and good will. Below transcribe

the full story. For the pdf version, click here .

Learn to write fiction

Writing and reading are two pleasures suitable for all audiences and ages. Many people write poems, short stories, novels and left to die in oblivion because they do not know what to do with them. The writing workshops are an option for those who dare to share and want to hear other people say about them. In these educational spaces, the literature is the excuse to stimulate the imagination group. Also to have fun and get to know yourself better. Ruben A.

Arribas

"They will not workshops to be professional writers, even though deep down they wish-but rather seek to share a concern that makes them freaks in their environment and that they can not share with other people. " Julio Espinosa, Chilean poet and director of the Writers' School of Zaragoza, that's the main reason that leads many people to join a writing workshop. Sean Argentine, Cuban and English, students share a passion: the love of literature. Similarly

expressed Leonardo Valencia, who directs the creative writing program at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. "Many come in the workshops because they want to be writers, but because they read and want to know how to write what they read ... Or just to chat about books, "says the author of Ecuador.

This workshop seeks to teach students the tools and resources they work with narrative writers. It combines theoretical lessons with practical exercises. Among the issues addressed are how to build a character, how to operate the point of view or what correction possibilities offers a text. In addition to the theoretical, students receive weekly a slogan that acts as a trigger to write. Class after class read aloud the exercises and listen to feedback from the teacher and colleagues argue what they liked and what not. With the criticisms and suggestions for improvement received, the students rewrite the text and submit it again.

Rather than the theoretical, learning rests heavily on the dialogue between the author and his readers. Hence, one of the most cost to students in the beginning to lose the fear to speak and write about what they really want. Who more and who less should bring down some internal taboo.

"When students ask me 'I can write on what?", I say that it is not that ... What happens is that you dare not tell that anything that even it would tell your closest friend. Here begins the writing, that is the starting point and once you assume that you assume the risk of writing ... And no one ever said that writing is easy, "says Leonardo Valencia. Remembering a childhood

longed to narrate feelings about immigration, history become an anecdote from a recent trip ... Everyone should find his topic at any time, in class you will learn the resources used by other authors and may serve to enhance what you have written. Of course, in exchange for spending some trouble when reading aloud.

"At first I was ashamed to share such intimate things ... But in the workshop learned how to relax, to break with stage fright, not to be afraid of what I think or feel, "says Claudia Tricerri Peruvian student in the Workshop Fuentetaja. He adds: "The classes teach you to open yourself to others: moving many feelings."

Targets met Some

complement its range of training workshops with talks by writers, book presentations and seminars on literature. Also, many of them tend to promote a magazine, blog, mailing list or forum where students publish their writing, share comments on books or pass information literature.

The prices of the latter are similar to those of the workshops or schools.

Cost may be a limiting factor, however, for some, like Luis Borges, is a personal incentive. "I am a little willful ... If I pay, I must discipline myself to produce texts more often ", argues that Venezuelan. He has taken workshops from high school and says he likes because he used to "learn from people who have gone through which is one." Now is his first novel at hand, hence be attending a workshop with Juan Carlos Méndez Arteduna Guédez, a Venezuelan writer with a strong literary career.

Most nights, Borges sits down to write at eleven o'clock, when it comes to work. He studied for screenwriter or television, but must settle for the time to sell door to door alarms. In any event, he perseveres in his own: "I try writing a page of my novel every night."

If it persists and continues to work in a few years will come the moment that everything in the background amateur craves: to publish. In fact, it can take as a reference to Peruvian Jose Luis Torres Vitola, who was a student of Guédez Méndez and published last year Algaida Publishers his storybook 5:37. words: who works, comes to objective.

In any case, if something is learned in a writing workshop is that publishing is the least important. If when you started playing the piano is not obsessed with giving concerts, with writing something similar has to happen: it takes years to master this demanding instrument made of words that is the language. Thus the emphasis should be on learning and enjoyment of writing.

Most students feel so. As Claudia says Tricerri, "for now looking to discover new authors, have someone read what I write and correct me." Her dream is to "publish something, something to read and say, I love." However notes: "I do not know if I want to live like this." And it is to learn to write or you like the literature are not inconsistent with any work pleasures.

** * BOXES

Luis Borges, 28. Luis maintains the blog http://oboed.blogspot.com and Venezuela as Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez, his writing teacher at the Workshop Arteduna. He came to Spain to do a Master's screenplay, and now works selling alarms door to door ... Still can not find employment in a film production or television. Your teacher what you value is "respectful tone to the person and his opinions, which come from experience: it shows has come a long way. " Inés

Bayon, 53. "Everyone who reads writes a bit," said the Colombian, whose father taught him as a child's love of books. In 2007 began writing classes at the Workshop Fuentetaja. Her experience and values: "I love to go: the only way you listen to what you write, and that's something that motivates me to keep writing." Do not think of publishing, according to her, the important thing now is to learn, have fun with colleagues and Gloria, her teacher, continue reading it and correcting it.

Alternatives: many and varied . Writing workshops covered a wide range of options. The most classic is the introduction to creative writing, short story, poetry and novels, but also be offered, journalistic writing, micro-stories or novels. Even there to work with the autobiography, explore children's literature and become familiar with movie scripts. And in almost all variants, the possibility of courses in person or online. Many of them are quarterly, but in general the more advanced workshops are presented as a regular annual course. In summer, you can do intensive courses. Useful

In this report, I left some things in the pipeline, but at least one of them wanted to rescue her, mostly because I insisted that I pass the data and in the end it came out in paper :

The cheapest: cultural centers and libraries. Antonio Jiménez Morato Elvira Navarro and free workshops taught in several municipal libraries in Madrid. In Bilbao, Deusto schools, San Francisco and Begoña courses offer very affordable. For Barcelona, \u200b\u200bit is best to ask at the nearest community center.
